No this isn’t a fictitious name, she was an old friend from school. Apologies in advance if you are reading this Lucy, but you have become a household name. The reason; as a child my Mum once asked me “who taught you this rudeness” and answered herself by saying Lucy Davies. I dont remember Lucy Davies ever being particularly rude aside from blowing raspberries once on a group outing, but for some reason my Mum must have believed that she exerted a rude influence.
I had forgotten about Lucy Davies until one day when my older boy decided to try out using rude words. I was in the process of telling him off when I got a sudden flashback of my Mum asking me “who taught you this rudeness”. Obviously it killed the moment, my stern tones changed to laughter and I had to explain myself. From this point onwards any rudeness from anybody in our house has been blamed on Lucy Davies, she is the teacher of rudeness.
Lucy Davies can be very therapeutic, it is refreshing to have someone to blame both for my parenting misdemeanours and my at times potty mouth tendencies. I suppose you could say that she is an imaginary friend although she did and hopefully still does exist. My inner adult is of course telling me that I should take full responsibility for my own rudeness and for that of my offspring. However that would be far less fun than blaming Lucy Davies.
