As the late George Michael sang. Yes this song was about betrayal and more importantly signified having a conscience. Obviously when it comes to kids and dogs, betrayl of this nature doesn’t come into it. However, there are times when the presence or absence of someone’s conscience is very obvious.
I recently had a bit of a meltdown about the behaviour of my boys and focused on the elements of this which were potentially or definitely my fault. I quickly realised that I am the only family member that feels any remorse for anything that goes wrong, and at the risk of sounding sexist I attribute this to being female. On some level, I, as I think many women are, have been programmed to believe that anything that I am involved which becomes problematic is somehow my fault. This attitude is not shared within the family. The only animal that shows any hint of regret at wrongdoing is the dog and even then it is only a hint.
Rocco the dog is still at the naughty puppy stage, I’m sure he should be growing out of it by now, he is after all nine months old and in human terms this would make him at least a pre-schooler. His behaviour is very toddler like and he frequently gets into trouble for chewing and destroying things, books and lego are particular favourites. Last night was such a night and he did indeed look a bit shame faced this morning as it was clear that we were less than pleased with his misdemenours.
I was recently talking to my Dad about our family dog Bob. Bob was my Dad’s kindred spirit in a house full of women and apparently he did know when he had done wrong. On one occasion my Dad came home from work to find an almighty mess in the garage. Our family cat had caught a bird and thought nothing of leaving the evidence for all to see. Bob was meanwhile cowering in a corner, convinced that he would somehow get the blame. Go figure.
What can we conclude from this? Aside from feeling as if you are almost the only one with a conscience in a house full of boys, I think I would be justified in concuding that cats should be a man’s best friend not dogs.
