Bet you’ve never heard that comparison before, I’ve only just thought of it myself.
When I was growing up we lived in a town house with a small back garden which had a tree right at the back. This tree was big and was rumoured to have roots which went underneath the house. Indeed on a windy night the branches could almost touch our bedroom window upstairs. Something had to be done, the tree needed to be cut down to size. In this case, cutting it down to size wasn’t going to cut it, so in time all that remained was a stump with a rather unattractive lump of fungi on it.
Do you get where this is going? Let me explain. Older boy is about to go into his final year at primary school, he is supremely confident (for the most part I am glad of this) and believes rather than thinks that he is always right. His Godmother told me that he will only be happy when he is in charge of his own life, unfortunately this is some time away. However, I am aware that starting “big school” is going to be a whole new ball game for him. New routines, lots more of the dreaded “h” word, loads more pupils, busier days and evenings, I could go on. In short, it may make older boy a bit more humble. In other words it will cut him down to size. Whilst I have no wish to see his confidence shattered, it would be good for his boots to fit properly for once. In the meantime, I need to hope that his roots and branches don’t engulf me or the other boys completely.
